Overwhelmed by Symptoms of Depression?

Feeling alone and disconnected? Overwhelmingly empty?

Tired of wearing a mask of happiness when inside you feel an inescapable despair?

Are your symptoms getting in the way at work, school, or home?

We are here to offer our support. We know it can feel very lonely and overwhelming to battle symptoms of depression. Despite moments of laughter, depression can quickly return and lead to feelings of hopelessness.

Depression Can Be Overwhelming

Living with constant feelings of clinical depression can feel like traveling through a dark tunnel with no end in sight. Each day becomes a battle against the relentless tide of sadness and despair, leaving you feeling drained and defeated before the day has even begun. The  weight of depression can strain relationships and isolate you from the world, making you feel helpless and alone in your struggles.

Yet, amidst the darkness, there is a potential for recovery. Therapy offers a beacon of hope in the darkness, providing you with the tools and support you need to navigate through the storm. With focused goals and the guidance of a skilled therapist, you can learn to challenge negative thought patterns and develop healthier ways of coping with your depression. While the journey of healing may be challenging, know that you are not alone.

With the support of therapy, you can emerge from the shadows of major depression and rediscover the beauty of life.

Clinical Depression is Relatively Common

Clinical depression has a high prevalence rate, with approximately 1 in 5 US adults meeting criteria for a clinical diagnosis (1) and approximately 1 in 6 adolescents meeting diagnostic criteria (2). Despite its widespread occurrence, depression often goes undiagnosed and untreated (3). Untreated depression can have severe long-term consequences, including an increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, substance abuse problems, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors, highlighting the critical importance of seeking treatment for major depression.

It's essential to recognize that depression is a common part of the human experience. Just as we all struggle with physical health at some point in our lives, we may also face mental health challenges, including depression. Psychological factors, such as negative thought patterns, low self-esteem, and unresolved trauma, can contribute to the development and persistence of depressive symptoms.  Whether triggered by significant life events, genetic predisposition, or environmental factors, depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background.

Navigating Symptoms of Depression

Depression can manifest in various ways, from persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness to disruptions in sleep patterns, appetite, and energy levels. It's not unusual for individuals with depression to withdraw from social activities, struggle with concentration, or lose interest in hobbies they once enjoyed. These symptoms can significantly disrupt daily functioning and impair relationships, work, and overall quality of life.

Depression is a journey, and recovery looks different for everyone. It's okay to seek support and take the necessary steps towards healing. With the help of a skilled therapist, you can learn coping mechanisms to help manage your symptoms of depression.

Questions about Starting Therapy?

“I’m afraid to open up about my depression. What if I’m judged?”

Opening up about your depression takes a lot of courage, and it's natural to worry about what others might think of you. Our therapists and support staff are dedicated to creating a judgment-free environment where you can feel safe expressing your inner thoughts and feelings. Your difficulties are valid, and by talking about them, you’re taking an important step towards healing. We want to assure you that our focus is on compassion and understanding, not judgment. We want to support your journey towards increased emotional and mental well-being.

“How long will I be in therapy before I start to see results?”

The timeline for therapy varies for each individual, as it depends on several factors such as the nature and depth of your concerns and your readiness for change. Some clients notice improvements within a few sessions or even the first session, even just through the act of sharing your inner and vulnerable thoughts in a compassionate setting, which often helps clients feel less alone in their struggles. Others may require more time to see significant progress. It's important to approach therapy with patience and openness, allowing yourself the time and space needed for growth and healing. Together, we'll collaborate to set realistic goals and work towards meaningful change at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

“Will therapy make me dependent on medication?”

Therapy and medication serve different purposes in treating depression, and our approach depends entirely on your unique needs and preferences. We prioritize exploring non-medication options first and only consider medication when it's deemed necessary and beneficial for your well-being. In cases where the therapist recommends medication, clients discuss potential prescription options with a medical doctor or psychiatric professional to further review specific recommendations. At Cholula Psychological Services, our overall goal is to empower you with the coping skills and strategies needed to promote long-term resilience to your depression, empowering you to navigate life's challenges effectively.
